In 1994, a cat breeder in St. Petersburg, Russia, decided to cross her two favorite cats to create a new breed. In order to create a cat that resembled a Sphynx but was really more closely linked to an Oriental Shorthair with a hair-loss gene, Olga Mironova crossed an Oriental Shorthair with a Donskoy cat.

The Russian Selectional Feline Federation (SFF) authorized the Peterbald cat in 1996. The breed was approved by the World Cat Federation (WCF) in 2003 and the International Cat Association (TICA) in 1997. The American Cat Fanciers Association authorized the Peterbald in 2008. Despite still being relatively uncommon in comparison to other cat breeds, the breed is growing in popularity due to its great temperament.
