A recent and somewhat uncommon breed known as the Nebelung was created in the United States in the 1980s. The German term “Nebel,” which means mist or fog, is where they got their name.
These stunning cats have huge green eyes and medium-length bluish-gray hair with a silvery shine. Although the two cat breeds are related and have a similar look, they are not the same and are often referred to as long-haired Russian Blues.
About The Breed
If you are fortunate enough to adopt a Nebelung cat into your house, you may anticipate a sociable, easygoing pet with remarkable good looks to complement an exceptional temperament.
The silvery topcoat and pristine blue undercoat of this cat give it a wonderful, enchanted aspect.
Although this cat has long hair, despite being theoretically a long-haired breed, its coat is actually medium length; it is longer than a shorthair cat’s but not quite as long as a Persian’s.
Nebelung Cat Breed History
Cora Cobb of the Nebelheim Cattery created the Nebelung cat breed. Cobb was influenced by a kitten named Siegfried, the sole long-haired blue kitten in a litter sired by a long-haired black cat and produced by Elsa, a black domestic shorthair. Siegfried was the only long-haired cat in the litter.
Cobb gave the long-haired blue kitten from the second litter the name Brunhilde. In 1986, Siegfried and Brunhilde gave birth to the first litter in a new breeding scheme.
The breed’s development was helped by the importation of Russian Blues from Eastern Europe in the late 1980s, which had the gene for long hair.
Cats were given New Breed designation by the International Cat Association in 1987 and full recognition in 1997. Nebelung kittens and Russian Blues can be outcrossed.
